Notes: This strain was collected from the East Pacific Rise (13degreesN) at a depth of 2600 meters. It was cultured at 80oC in basal salts medium containing carbon monoxide in the gas phase. It represents the first evidence of a hyperthermophile utilizing carbon monoxide as both a carbon and energy source, resulting in hydrogen production.
